In 1985, shortly after United States Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers, Congressman Duncan Hunter invited Kiki’s high school friend, Henry Lozano, Director of Imperial Valley County Teen Challenge to launch “Camarena Clubs” in their hometown of Calexico, California. This drug abuse prevention initiative was launched nationally in 1988 and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration estimates that 80 million Americans participated in some way during 2011.
